Karl Flaum was the illegitimate son of Friedrich Schoen and Wilhemina [?] Flaum; he was born in East Prussia, not far from the Imperial city of Koenigsberg.
He was related through birth and marriage to the Schoen, Haske and Dunkel families, who preceded his family to Cleveland in 1888. He served in the Prussian army, and claimed to once have been the Kaiser's barber, a story that cannot be verified.
He was a hard working, stubborn old German, who refused to learn English, and held steadfast to his old Prussian ways to the end of his days.
