Katheryn Cussins of Davis, Tucker County, WV was born on September 13, 1916. She was married to Ralph Cussins, and they were together until Ralph's death in May 1987. She had children David Allen Cussins, Don Cussins, Betty Cussins, Jim Cussins, and Roger Cussins. Katheryn Cussins died at age 88 years old on September 5, 2005.

In 1928, when she was only 12 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
