She had siblings Mary Alma Schmidt, Alma Payne, Charles Henry Smith, Albert William Smith, Dorothy Klatte, and Olive Mary Lovig. She married Thorvald Berg in 1913, and had a child Sigmund Charles Berg. Kathleen Berg died at age 58 years old in 1948 in South Melbourne.

In 1890, in the year that Kathleen Berg was born, on December 29th, the Wounded Knee Massacre occurred in South Dakota on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation . The U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment said that they rode into the Lakota camp "trying to disarm" the inhabitants. One person, Black Coyote - who was deaf - held onto his rifle, saying that he paid a lot of money for it. Shots rang out and by the end at least 153 Lakota Sioux - some estimates say 300 - and 25 troops had died. The site of the massacre is a National Historic Landmark.

In 1903, she was merely 13 years old when two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.
