  • Introduction

    Alfred remarried to Emily Riley (1863- 1913) who was seventeen years younger - the marriage did not last. Alfred went into partnership with his younger brother Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens in a stock and station business initially based in Melbourne but later with a branch at Wilcannia, NSW. The stock and station agency failed in the depression of the 1890s. Alfred then embarked on a series of speaking engagements in which he read from his father's works and expatiated on his father's life. he was assisted by a firm of theatrical producers from Melbourne to tour Britain and America where he died on his second tour of the USA in Dec 1911.

    Lived in Hamilton, Victoria with father Alfred Tennyson D'Orsay Dickens and mother Augusta Jessie (nee Devlin) till mother's death in road accident on Sat 14 Dec 1878. Soon after (1882) father took Kathleen and younger sister Violet Georgina (born 1876 at Hamilton, Victoria) to live in Melbourne, Victoria. Kathleen and her sister Violet attended the Cornelia Ladies' College at Toorak, a suburb of Melbourne in the early 1890s where they were taught by a French governess, the wife of noted journalist Fred J Broomfield.
  • Personal Life & Family

    At Cornelia, Kathleen was described as a young lady who "had already outgrown any very keen appreciation of the works of her grandfather", English novelist Charles Dickens. Both girls departed from Australia after leaving school to live in the United Kingdom.
