    Mary began her business career selling books door-to-door when her first husband Ben Rogers served in World War II. When Ben returned, they divorced and she married George Hellenbeck, the brother of Mary C. Crowley, founder of Home Interiors and Gifts. She worked at Stanley Home Products and got frustrated in a male dominated workplace when a man she trained received a promotion instead of her. She went to write a book to assist women in business, but it became a business plan for what would later become Mary Kay Cosmetics. One month prior to the beginning of Mary Kay Cosmetics her husband died. With a $5,000 investment for her oldest son and with the help of her youngest son, they began the original storefront "Beauty by Mary Kay" in Dallas Texas.
