  • Introduction

    My grandfather was a tenant farmer. He was one of 14 children. We believe he was born in Little Washington or The Plains Virginia. Sadly the courthouse burned down with all the records. He worked at the prison/jail in the mid 1920’s the became the fist civilian fire caption at Quantico Marine Crop Base. He retired in the late 60’s early 70’s. He had one child, Melba Lee Doig born in 1941. He also had 2 grandchildren, Chuck Doig and me. He married our grandmother Marjorie Lee Dunaway from Annapolis MD. They settled in Fredericksburg Virginia. He loved his family beyond words.

    My grandfather read the Bible everyday of his life. He had a strong faith in God and Jesus. He grew up baptist and belonged to Raymouth Baptist Church in Stafford Va as well as Fairview Baptist Church in his later years.

    No. He was the first civilian fire captain at Quantico USMC Base. He also worked at the prison/jail in Warrenton Virginia. He continued to farm and always had a garden. He was always working.

    He never knew a stranger. I remember the me time he told me that while walking to our local McDonald’s a young man stopped and asked his for a few dollars as he hadn’t eaten n a few days. He replied no but I’d you’re hungry I’ll buy you some food. They walked back to McDonald’s and he fed the young man as promised. He enjoyed watching him eat. They talked for a while and before parting ways Pop gave the young man $20.

In 1914, in the year that Kelly B Cader was born, in only his second big-screen appearance, Charlie Chaplin played the Little Tramp, his most famous character. The silent film was made in January and released the following year. Of the character, Chaplin said: "On the way to the wardrobe I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. I wanted everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large." The moustache was added to age his 24-year-old face without masking his expressions.
