He had siblings including a brother Keiji Keiei Ikehara (1931-2010). He lived in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii, USA and on his 18th birthday, January 23, 1945, he registered for the WWII draft. At the time, he was a student and resided in Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii. After the end of World War II, Kenichi enlisted in the United States Army on February 14, 1946, in Moscow, Idaho. He served in the Corps of Engineers as a Private First Class until his discharge date of February 20, 1953. He achieved the rank of Sergeant First Class during his time in the army and served in both World War II and the Korean War.
