Kenneth Coulthard was born on December 16, 1915 in Yarram, VIC Australia to John James Coulthard and Irene Victoria Coulthard [Gay], and had siblings Herbert James Coulthard, Francis Claude Coulthard, Jean Winter - Nee Coulthard, and Avis Gross - Nee Coulthard. He married Elsie Marjorie Coulthard - Nee Hanslow, and had children Lester John Coulthard, Allan Murray Coulthard, and Darryl Whitford Coulthard. Kenneth Coulthard died at age 51 years old on April 18, 1967 in Box Hill.

In 1915, in the year that Kenneth Coulthard was born, The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".
