About Ky

Introduction

South Vietnamese Prime Minister and Air Force General. Nguyen Cao Ky was one of South Vietnam's most colorful leaders. In the early 1960s, he rose to the rank of general in the fledgling South Vietnamese Air Force, ultimately becoming its top commander. In 1965, he was chosen prime minister of the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese government by a junta of Vietnamese generals, despite the fact that he had no political experience. He ruled the country with an iron fist and was able to end the cycle of coups and counter-coups that had plagued the country following the assassination of former South Vietnamese Primier Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963. During a Buddhist-led uprising in Da Nang in 1966, he used Army troops to crush the demonstrations and placed the country's leading Buddhist cleric under house arrest. He was also known as a playboy who loved purple scarves, upscale nightclubs and beautiful women. In 1967, he lost the Vietnamese presidential election to his longtime rival, Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu, and then served as Thieu's vice president from 1967 to 1971. When Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese forces in 1975, he fled the country with his family, ultimately settling in the United States. Ky was born in 1930 in the northern province of Son Tay, west of Hanoi. He grew up under French colonial rule and as a young man became involved in Ho Chi Minh's national liberation movement. He eventually left the movement and later joined the French colonial army, where he trained as a pilot during the French fight against the communist insurgency. After the French defeat in 1954, he fled south to Saigon where he joined the South Vietnamese air force. Ky was married three times, and had six children. He died in a hospital in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he was being treated for a respiratory ailment.

1930 - 2011 World Events

Refresh this page to see various historical events that occurred during Ky's lifetime.

In 1930, in the year that Ky C Nguyen was born, on August 6th, N.Y. Supreme Court Judge Joseph Crater went through papers in his office, destroyed some of them, withdrew all his money from the bank - $5,150, sold his stock, met friends at a restaurant for dinner and disappeared after getting into a taxi (or walking down the street - his friends' testimony later changed). His disappearance was reported to the police on September 3rd - almost a month later. His wife didn't know what happened, his fellow Justices had no idea, and his mistresses (he had several) said that they didn't know. While his disappearance was front page news, his fate was never discovered and after 40 years the case was closed, still without knowing if Crater was dead or alive.

In 1948, at the age of 18 years old, Ky was alive when on May 14th, the State of Israel was proclaimed by David Ben-Gurion, who became Israel's first Premier, and the U.S. officially recognized Israel. That evening, Egypt launched an air assault on Israel.

In 1953, Ky was 23 years old when actress and comedian Lucille Ball gave birth to Desi Arnaz, Jr on January 19th. On the same day on "I Love Lucy", the fictional Little Ricky was born as well. Baby Desi graced the cover of the first TV Guide magazine with a headline that read ""Lucy's $50,000,000 baby" - because the commercial revenue from his birth was expected to be that amount.

In 1968, at the age of 38 years old, Ky was alive when on April 4th, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights leader, was shot and killed by an assassin in Memphis. James Earl Ray was apprehended and plead guilty to shooting Dr. King. Ray died in jail in 1998.

In 1994, Ky was 64 years old when on May 6th, the Channel Tunnel or "Chunnel" was officially opened. The Chunnel is a railway tunnel beneath the English Channel that connects Great Britain to mainland France. Original plans for such a tunnel were developed in 1802 and approved by Napoleon Bonaparte but the British rejected the plan fearing that Napoleon would use the railway to invade.
