  • Introduction

I can't tell you when was the last time I saw Lance, that is so unimportant now that he's gone. I can, however tell you the first time I met him. A free minded child of 14 or so came home with my son after school one day, full of shy humor and a keen vocabulary. His hair shoulder length, much like a favorite singer of his, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. He even looked remarkedly liked Vedder as many of his friends had often told him. I got to know Lance as much as any mother could know her son's friends. I liked him immediatly and that eventually grew to respect and admiration for this youth who had so captured my entire family. Lance was cool. Cool without even trying. Just as his mother once told me, "Lance was born Cool" and indeed he was. He kept up with current trends, often creating his own trends in his circle of peers. I never knew a young man to be so worldly about things. As it turned out he was always excersising his mind with current events from the local paper, and various other sources' for mental fullfillment. The one thing I recall is that he knew he was going to make his mark in the music industry. And I had no doubt the he would as did everyone who knew him. The following is from the Drum and Bass website (www.ncdnb.com) On November 2, 2001, everyone who had ever spent a night laughing and talking with Lance Presson or Joe Sullivan would be changed forever. The four core R&R members (Alias, Loki, Mojojojo, shyguy) were on their way to Raleigh to see a show with Moving Fusion. Alias and shyguy were to be tagging that evening. They made it to exit 341, and were trying to get gas, when they were struck by another car. Sadly, Lance and Joe did not make it. Danny incurred multiple fractures and Brian emerged bruised ,with a seperated shoulder, but both alive. The accident sent a shockwave through the east coast drum'n'bass community. Many knew Lance and Joe through the weekly, NC dnb events, and Lance's production, including his infamous remix of Digital's 'Deadline'. They are sorely missed one year later. Lance Presson's legacy lives on with the release of two of his tracks in collaboration with Focus, "Objection" and "Jabberjaw" are available worldwide on the NC-based Necmron Recordings. Look for Ziplock, a tune cained by Bailey since it was given to him by Lance himself shortly before his death, on the R&R-affiliated Basic Operations label some time in the future. Lance is the son of Jenny D. Presson of Wilmington, NC., and Sam Presson & wife Nancy of Akins SC.
