In 1838, in the year that Lars Andrew (Horgen) Hanson was born, on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.

In 1847, at the age of just 9 years old, Lars was alive when on July 29th, Cumberland School of Law was opened in Lebanon Tennessee - the 11th oldest law school in the United States. As of the end of the year, the United States had 15 law schools.

In 1853, at the age of just 15 years old, Lars was alive when in May, Levi Strauss & Co. was founded in San Francisco. In the 1870's, the company began manufacturing denim overalls and their first pair of Levis 501 jeans were introduced in the 1890s.

In 1880, Lars was 42 years old when on February 2nd the city of Wabash, Indiana became the third city in the world to be lit by electricity.
