Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs 1871 - 1937

Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs was born on October 31, 1871 in Davidson County, North Carolina United States to John Hubbard Walser and Eliza Jane (Myers) Walser, and had siblings Malinda Josephine (Walser) Hege, Susan Edith (Walser) Shoaf, Mary Ellen Walser, and Mittie (Walser) Foster. She married Robert Obey Berrier in 1888. They had a child Clara Vestal (Hobbs) Walser. She married Daniel Jackson Hobbs in 1893. They had children Annie (Hobbs) Snyder, Robert Holt Hobbs, and Leo Arvil Hobbs. Laura Hobbs died at age 66 years old on December 8, 1937 in Tyro.

  • Introduction

    This woman's first husband was lynched. He'd been accused of shooting his mother-in-law (Laura's mother) in Oct 1899 as he tried to take his young child, Clara, from her care while his wife was in the asylum in Morganton. His mother-in-law resisted and he reportedly shot her. A group of men from the area lynched him. His widow remarried. (submitted by Suzannah McCuen)

In 1871, in the year that Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs was born, on October 8th, 4 major fires started on the shores of Lake Michigan - in Chicago (Illinois), Peshtigo (Wisconsin), Holland (Michigan) and Manistee (Michigan). The Chicago fire is the most well known of them because it left almost 100,000 people homeless. But the Peshtigo Fire killed around 2,500 people. The casualty count made it the deadliest fire in US history.

In 1882, by the time she was only 11 years old, on January 5th, writer and lawyer Charles J. Guiteau was found guilty of the assassination of President Garfield. Guiteau was "offended" because his job applications had been rejected by Garfield's government. He was sentenced to death -although his lawyer plead insanity - and hanged five months later, on June 30th.
