Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs 1871 - 1937

Laura Columbus (Walser) Hobbs was born on October 31, 1871 in Davidson County, North Carolina United States to John Hubbard Walser and Eliza Jane (Myers) Walser, and had siblings Malinda Josephine (Walser) Hege, Susan Edith (Walser) Shoaf, Mary Ellen Walser, and Mittie (Walser) Foster. She married Robert Obey Berrier in 1888. They had a child Clara Vestal (Hobbs) Walser. She married Daniel Jackson Hobbs in 1893. They had children Annie (Hobbs) Snyder, Robert Holt Hobbs, and Leo Arvil Hobbs. Laura Hobbs died at age 66 years old on December 8, 1937 in Tyro.

    This woman's first husband was lynched. He'd been accused of shooting his mother-in-law (Laura's mother) in Oct 1899 as he tried to take his young child, Clara, from her care while his wife was in the asylum in Morganton. His mother-in-law resisted and he reportedly shot her. A group of men from the area lynched him. His widow remarried. (submitted by Suzannah McCuen)
