    Lawrence James Newell was born on August 26, 1901 in Carman, Manitoba, Canada to parents William John Newell (1876-1969) and Isabella Adeline Armstrong (1879-1969). He had siblings Hazel Winnifred (1902-1996), John Raymond (1904-1986), Mabel Lepha (1909-2000), and Laura Beatrice Newell (1913-2001). He moved to St Joseph, Pembina, North Dakota, USA as a young boy and lived there and in Walhalla, Pembina, North Dakota for most of his life. On October 19, 1922 he married Pearl Schurman (1902-1952) in Walhalla. In the 1940's Lawrence moved to Los Angeles, California, USA after a divorce, and enlisted on October 23, 1942 in San Francisco California. He served in the US Army from October 23, 1942 until September 24, 1943.
