He married Shelvia Ann (Dula) Richards in Caldwell County, and they were married until Shelvia's death on May 25, 2013. He had a child Fred Leverne Richards. Lawrence Richards died at age 84 years old on January 27, 2019 in Hudson, Caldwell County.

He was born November 27, 1934 in Caldwell County to the late Bryson Moore and Mary Pauline Teague Richards. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Shelvia Dula Richards; and a son, Fred Laverne Richards. Mr. Richards was retired after 35 years from Jiffy Packaging as a production manager and was a member of Whitnel Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors include two sons, Bryson Richards and Stewart Richards and wife Teresa, all of Hudson, NC; his twin sister, Lois Pennell of Morganton, NC; four grandchildren, Benjie Richards and wife Summer of Lenoir, Robin Laxton and husband Steven of Lincolnton, NC, Josh Richards of Granite Falls and Brad Richards of Lenoir, NC; and six great-grandchildren, Kaleb Laxton of Lincolnton, Kayla Laxton of Lincolnton, Darby Maie Richards of Lenoir, Xander Richards of Granite Falls, Adisyn Richards of Lenoir and Lindsay Griffin of Hudson. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Keith Gilliam. Interment will immediately follow the service at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls, NC The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645 Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the Richards family.
