    OLSON, Lawrence R., 76, of Apollo Beach, Fla., passed away Friday, October 26, 2007. Born in Blossburg, Pa., he move to this area in 1984. He was a retired tech sergeant in the U.S. Air Force , where he received numerous commen-dations for meritorious service. He was a member of theVeterans of Foreign Wars and past president of Caribbean Isles Civic Association. Survivors include his beloved wife, Anita; sons, Larry Olson of Tampa, and Jeffrey and Michael Olson of North Carolina; daughters, Linda Bailey and Lori Vaughn of North Carolina; stepsons, John and Joseph Wathey of Tampa; step- daughters, Deborah McCoy of Tampa, Anne-Marie Lopez of Odessa, Fla., Nancy Guerra of Tampa; sister, Wanda Welch of New York; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at Apollo Beach Community Church, Apollo Beach, Fla. Interment will be at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to LifePath Hospice.

In 1931, in the year that Lawrence Reynolds Olson was born, on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.

In 1948, Lawrence was 17 years old when on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by a member of a Hindu nationalist party who thought that Gandhi was too accommodating to Muslims. The man, Nathuram Godse, shot Gandhi 3 times. He died immediately. The shooter was tried, convicted, and hung in November 1949.
