Lazarus Straus was born on April 25, 1809 in Otterberg, RP Germany. He was married to Sara Straus, and they were together until Sara's death on July 21, 1876. He had children Isidor Straus, Hermine Straus Kohns, Nathan Straus, and Oscar Solomon Straus. Lazarus Straus died at age 88 years old on January 14, 1898 in New York, New York United States.

In 1809, in the year that Lazarus Straus was born, on December 30th, Boston Massachusetts banned the wearing of masks at balls. Boston was following many other places - including England - by banning masked balls, which were considered to contribute to loose morals. After all, with masks, you couldn't tell the class of the person or even their gender! The law was extended in 1849 and repealed in 1963.
