I was a mother's helper for the summer and Lee was the boy next door.
I was 15 and Lee was 17. I dated him until he went off to college to be an accountant. I liked Lee because he was easygoing and had a great sense of humor. I liked both of his parents and it was very obvious that his mother strongly approved of me.
She didn't care that I wasn't Jewish because I was a Unitarian and collected Jewish jokes and used a lot of Yiddish in my conversations. I even subscribed to the Carolina Israelite and read Harry Golden books. So I had his mother's stamp of approval. My mother approved of Lee too. He did not like going to college and got an office job instead. I worked as a library clerk for Price Waterhouse in the Wall Street area and analyzed handwriting for tips. When we got together, it was more of a group meeting than boy-girl dating.
