Leoluca came over on ship from Palermo, to New York. He migrated to Chicago, and finally to San Jose, California. The story is that he made stills for Al Capone. He was a Tin Smith. He had seven sons. He came to San Jose with my parents and my grandmother to live on East Empire Street. I remember how he would smoke Camel Cigarettes down to the fingernail while sitting on the front porch .

In 1877, in the year that Leoluca Cortemiglio was born, on January 8th, the Battle of Wolf Mountain occurred in southern Montana Territory. Crazy Horse, Two Moon, and their warriors fought the United States Cavalry. The battle was a tactical draw and by May, Crazy Horse and his followers had surrendered at Camp Robinson.

In 1907, at the age of 30 years old, Leoluca was alive when the Monongah coal mining disaster occurred on December 6th, happening at the Fairmont Coal Company’s No. 6 and No. 8 mines.. Over 361 miners were killed. Because there was no breathing apparatus at the time to help rescuers, recovery efforts were greatly hampered. It is considered the worst mining disaster in American history and led to government oversight in mining practices.
