Leon Camacho was rescued during WWII by my father, U.S. Army Corporal, Eugene J. Madden. Leon escaped from the Japanese, and found his way into the army encampment, looking for food. Many other Chimorra boys, also did the same, and the commanding officer, put my father "in charge" of all these children. Needless to say, my 19 year old father (who wouldn't be married or a parent, for another 10 years)...wasn't happy about the responsibility. how to take care of dozens upon dozens of little boys...during bombings of Saipan!.
Long story...but, it ended with national news stories...and Mr. Sunday, is what the boys, called my dad. Leon was my dad's FAVORITE CHILD...when my dad told me the story, and showed me black & white pictures...when I WAS AGE SIX YEARS.
On the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII, I WENT TO SAIPAN WITH THOSE BLACK & whites...to find Leon Comacho...
I found him...in 1994?....on his 61st birthday.
STORY OF THE SEARCH IN GUAM newspaper.
Fantastic man. He loved my dad, and cried...told me everything he experienced & what my dad did to keep them all alive for years.
