  • Introduction

    I am Leona Gayle (Cordell) Carmack. Feels a tad eerie to stumble upon one of these and my own memorial page is already set up. It is December of 2022 when I am adding this.....just because. If it's going to be told, just get it right. I was born to Lee Alton Cordell and Charlotte Gayle (Miller) Cordell on August 25, 1973. There are 5 of us. Their children, that is. I am now a grandmother of three and raised four children with my husband, Johnny Dale Carmack. We married way back in 1992 on Christmas Eve. He left for Army Bootcamp a week later. Even the stories on this wide web will never be complete.......because even those of us who have lived the stories don't know all of them. History is like that. The stories fade away on the winds or change ever so slightly each time they are told and depend on the storytelling. I'm still living my life, so this is not a memorial page as of yet. Perhaps I will keep updating this section as I go. Or just leave it be and let it be told by others. At 49 years old, I hope to have another 51 years before I tap out as a Matron of Moxie at 100 years old. Maybe even 101 just to say I did. In 1980, on April 24th, a rescue attempt was begun in the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The attempt failed and 8 US servicemen were killed. Eight helicopters had been sent for the mission, but only 5 arrived in operating condition., Since the military had advised that the mission be aborted if there were fewer than 6 helicopters, President Carter stopped it. Upon leaving, a helicopter collided with a transport plane and the men were killed.
