Leonard Charles Humphries of Prahran Australia was born in 1919 to George Humphries and Sarah Humphries. He had siblings Mary Ann Humphries, George Humphries, Kate Humphries, Henry John Humphries, Esther Humphries, John Humphries, George Humphries, and Elizabeth Humphries. He married Helen Buchanan in 1944, and had a child Brian Leonard. Leonard Humphries died at age 57 years old in 1976 in Prahran.

In 1919, in the year that Leonard Charles Humphries was born, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.

In 1920, he was just 1 year old when the National Football League, first called the American Professional Football Association, was created. College football was more popular than pro football and rising player salaries were bankrupting league owners. In response, owners created the NFL, using the pro baseball association as a model. Eleven teams were formed: the Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys, Hammond Pros, Massillon Tigers, Muncie Flyers, Racine Cardinals, Rochester Jeffersons and Rock Island Independents.
