He married Mildred Lillian Kaminsky in 1945 in New York City, New York County, and they were married until Leonard's death on March 4, 1990 in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida. He had children Martin Leonard Kaminsky and Gayle Marsha Kaminsky. Leonard Kaminsky was buried on March 10, 1990 at Mt Judah Cemetery 81-14 Cypress Ave, in Queens County, NY.

In 1919, in the year that Leonard Harvey Kaminsky was born, in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
