    He was born in Jeffersonville, IN but his family moved to Charlestown later on during his childhood. He was drafted into the military and spent most of the time in the Pacific during WWII. Moved to New Washington, Indiana for several years to raise a family of twelve children with his wife Margaret Mary (McCartney) Schindler. Sold the farm in New Washington and moved back to Charlestown. They lived in Dunnellon, Florida during the winter time until selling their place and moving back to Charlestown for good.

    Was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9269, in Charlestown, IN. He also was a member of the American Legion and VFW in Charlestown. Was an avid fisherman, who loved to tell stories of his greatest catches. He would never stay home for a very long time b/c he would be taking a drive to visit family and friends. Never knew a stranger and loved to talk your ear off. Often during the morning, he would be sitting up with the guys drinking coffee at the Druthers in Charlestown. Later in life, he and his wife would spend Thursday-Saturday Mornings going to yard sales. He cherished his wife and family to the day he died.

In 1918, in the year that Leonard J Schindler was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.

His plane "The Spirit of St. Louis" was a fabric-covered, single-seat, single-engine "Ryan NYP" high-wing monoplane designed by both Lindbergh and the manufacturer's chief engineer.
