  • Introduction

    I can remember going to the flea market on Sundays with my father. We spent hours walking up and down the aisles. I can remember his scent. Last year, I walked outside and I felt his presence move thru me. One time, we were at the flea market and he loved to negotiate. He negotiated a pack of underwear that was already cheap. It was like 5 pair for 5 dollars or something. Anyway, he negotiated the pack of underwear down to 3 bucks. We got home and he was excited about to show off the underwear to my Mother, he pulled them out and we all started bursting in laughter..not one pair had any elastic in them!! He was a rock to our family.

In 1934, in the year that Leonard R Camiso Jr was born, on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.
