But back then it was known as the Indian Territory, Choctaw Nation. This was before Oklahoma bacame a state on November 16, 1907.(Note: just outside McCalester Town... See the 1900 Census photo posted).. His father, Emanual (Manual) H. Gragg, his Grandfather, William H. Gragg, and his Granduncle Samuel Gragg, and their families, moved to the Okalahoma Territory from Henry County, Missouri, sometime before the 1900 census was taken, and all had farms near each other. In 1900, in the year that Leroy Gragg was born, when Floradora opened on Broadway. A huge success in London - opening in 1899 and running for 455 performances - the musical was even more successful in New York - running for 552 performances. The "Floradora girls" were the hit of the show - a "sextette of tall, gorgeous damsels, clad in pink walking costumes, black picture hats and carrying frilly parasols who swished onto the stage and captivated New York for no other reason than they were utterly stunning" ("tall and gorgeous" translated to 5'4"). A sensation, each Floradora girl was said to have married a millionaire.

In 1911, at the age of only 11 years old, Leroy was alive when the first Indianapolis 500 was run in May. Ray Harroun was the winner - he was an engineer and had retired from racing but he came back for this race. After the race, he retired for good. The purse was $27,550 - the largest offered up to that time - and Harroun received $10,000 for first place. His average time was 74.602 mph.
