Leslie Hiram Jones of Footscray, City of Maribyrnong County, VIC Australia was born in 1894 in Footscray to Hiram Jones and Matilda Ballance Jones. He had siblings Minnie Jones, Doris Jones, William George Jones, Annie Elizabeth Jones, and Elsie May Jones. He married Dorothea Grace (Hubber) Jones in 1914, and had children Cyril Pierrepont Jones, Lesley Winifred Jones, Kevin Bruce Jones, and Dorothea Arundel Paull. Leslie Jones died at age 79 years old in 1973 in Footscray.

In 1894, in the year that Leslie Hiram Jones was born, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.

In 1902, he was merely 8 years old when the world famous Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, made the first gramophone recording by a popular singer. Accompanied by only a piano, his voice recordings became a big seller and did much to popularize the new-fangled gramophone. He had to sing into a metal "horn" that relayed his voice to a metal disc. And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!
