Captain Leslie Ormonde Rumley (born 1912) was the first person in Mornington, Victoria to join up and he was proud of this. A couple of his men turned up at his funeral in circa 1986. There are photographs of him when he was still suffering from malaria and lying on a wicker lounge under the almond tree at 467 Kooyong Road, Elsternwick where he lived with his wife Margaret (nee Pilgrim) from 1949.
He lived and breathed the War for many years. We watched all the war movies on TV from the 1960s. A few weeks before he died I visited him daily and read to him stories from his cherished book on the 2/8th Division. Two days before he died in considerable distress he asked me not to read any more about the War. “I’m going to see Jeff now”, he said. Jeff was his older brother who died of leukemia soon after (or at the end) of the War.
Before the War Dad had a potato farm at Kyneton, Victoria. He would have loved to continue farming after the War, but mother preferred to live in the city. He became a painter and decorator and ran his business with three or four employees up to circa 1980 when he became ill from diseases sustained in the War.
He was a keen gardener, watercolourist and sketcher and a loving father. Some of his fine pencil sketches were done in his tiny notebook during the War.
When I made up Dad’s World War Two photo album I included a typed a short synopsis of where he trained and fought. A fuller story of his Battalion 2/8th is found on Wikipedia. At the bottom of the typed note Dad asked me to write, “Doesn’t look much for six year’s war.”
Daughter: Katrina LeBreton Rumley AM., born Melbourne 1946. Lives in Bingil Bay, north Queensland. (only chilld)
