Leslie Thomas Carland was born in 1895 in Haddon, Golden Plains Shire County, VIC Australia to Francis Carland and Ellen (Cox) Carland, and had siblings Catherine Ida (Carland) Tippins, Frank Carland, William Carland, Lillian (Carland) Morris, Myra (Carland) Johnson, and Bernard Joseph Carland. Leslie Carland died at age 19 years old on May 2, 1915 at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli. in Turkey, and was buried at Lone Pine Cemetery in Eceabat County, Çanakkale.

    The Ballarat Courier. 26th November 1914. HADDON. A SOLDIER WRITES HOME. Mr. Frank Carland had received a letter from his son, Leslie, who is accompanying the Expeditionary Force. He said there were 24 troopships and some cruisers. All the letters are censored. Young Carland was formerly a clerk in the Victorian Railway Department, from which he resigned and went to Tasmania, and from that place he volunteered for active service. The Age, Melbourne. 2nd May 1917. IN MEMORIAM. CARLAND.- In sad and loving memory of our beloved son, Private Leslie Carland, killed at Gaba Tepe on 2nd May, 1915, 12th Battalion, 1st Australian Division, loving brother of Frank, Katie, Willie, Lily, Myra and Bernie, of Newport, late Haddon, in his 20th year. Greater love has no man than this, that he laid down his life for his friends. -Inserted by his loving mother and father-

    The Evening Echo. Ballarat. 16th June 1915. PRIVATE LESLIE CARLAND. Private Leslie Carland, killed in action, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carland, of Haddon. He was 20 years of age. He was a High School scholar, and subsequently was a clerk in the Railway Department, from which he resigned. He enlisted in Tasmania, where he was employed as a clerk in the shipping office of Holyman and Sons. He was among the first to volunteer. Private Carland was a general favourite. He celebrated his 20th birthday the day he left Egypt for the front.
