Lev (Leon) joined the SS, probably in Kremenets after the Soviets shot his father, brother and sister-in-law. He may well have thought at the time that the German SS weren't as brutal as the Soviets, or that he'd learn to fight under the Germans against the Soviets or he may even have been conscripted but whatever the reason it was soon apparent to Leon that he couldn't continue fighting for the Germans. After making arrangements with the FFI once the Germans deployed his batallion to France Leon, who was Major Lev Hloba by then defected with all the men in his batallion as well as equipment and arms and fought with the FFI for the duration of the war. His story is told by Waller B. Booth as part of his book "Mission:Marcel-Proust: The Story of an Unusual OSS Undertaking. The OSS stands for the Office of Strategic Services and was the precursor to today's CIA. Booth was a Lieutenant Colonel. After Leon died we found papers in his safety deposit box. Some were orders from the FFI, another was a letter from Booth saying he'd never seen a finer fighting unit than the Ukrainian Batallion. Leon was awarded medals which we haven't found but we know one was the Croix de guerre from France. Some claim he was a hero. There are monuments in France to the Ukrainians who fought to liberate their country. For more details go to as I don't think there's enough space here to tell to the full extent the part he played in WWII..
