Lilian Maude Black 1888 - 1963

Lilian Maude Black of Port Australia was born in 1888 in Casterton, Glenelg Shire County, VIC to John Black and Louisa Sealey. She had siblings Susan Mary Black, Ernest John Black, Walter Thomas Black, Gordon Alexander Black, Myrtle Lousia Black, Christina Martha Black, George Charles Frederick Black, John William Black, Florence Jessie Black, and Stanley James Robert Black. Lilian Black married William Crouch Dunne in 1914, and died at age 75 years old in 1963 in Portland.

In 1888, in the year that Lilian Maude Black was born, Irishman John Robert Gregg published a pamphlet in the U.S., teaching his first version of shorthand - Gregg shorthand. When he improved on the first version and published it 5 years later, Gregg shorthand became popular.

In 1898, when she was merely 10 years old, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
