  • Introduction

    - The Geelong Advertiser, Victoria. 4th November 1861.- A strong military force has reached the colony within the past few days, by the Elizabeth Ann Bright, from Liverpool. It consists of a company of the Royal Artillery, Major Dickson in command, Captain Purcell, Lieutenants Noyes, Nind, Grubb, Assistant-Surgeon Stoney, 7 serjeants, 4 corporals, 4 bombardiers, 100 gunners, and 2 trumpeters. The commander and the surgeon are accompanied by their wives. In addition to our population the ship brought two hundred and fifty six cabin, intermediate and steerage passengers. Bell's Life in Victoria and Sporting Chronicle. Melbourne. 9th November 1861. ARRIVAL OF DETACHMENT OF ROYAL ARTILLERY. -The Elizabeth Ann Bright arrived on Friday, with a detachment of Royal Artillery, consisting of Major Dickson, Captain Purcell, Lieutenants Noyes, Lind, and Grubb......., The men are fine stalwart fellows, and appear to to have been, for the most part, recruited from a very respectable class of society. Major Dickson, who is in command, served in the eastern campaign of 1854-5, including the battles of Alma and Balaclava, siege and fall of Sebastopol, in the trenches with the siege-train and at the bombardments of April, and 6th and 17th June. He is decorated with the medal and clasps, and is also a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
