Blind in one eye, a fact he concealed from the Navy until 1942, and suffering recurring medical problems associated with the loss of the Armidale, he was eventually classified unfit for sea duty in 1944 and appointed as Senior Naval Officer at the Williamstown Naval Depot, an appointment he held until the end of the war.
