Lockhart married Louise Swain Landreth (1913 - 1981) on March 29,1940 in Bristol, Pennsylvania, and they had four children, two daughters and two sons. One son was Symington Phillips Landreth Amerman (1945 - 2017).

    He was Assistant Pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. Besides serving as a minister, he published young adult mystery novels such as Guns in the Heather; Cape Cod Casket in 1964 and The Sly One in 1966. One of his stories - Guns in the Heather - was released on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, released in 1969. The episode starred Kurt Russell.
