Lora Alma (Dickie) Calaby of South Melbourne, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia was born in 1888 in Dunkeld to Robert Dickie and Annie Clarke Dickie. She had siblings Margaret Amelia Dickie and Thomas William Dickie. She married Henry Albert Calaby in 1912, and had children Gladys Elizabeth Calaby, Beryl Linda Calaby, and William Henry Clifford Calaby. Lora Calaby died at age 56 years old in 1944 in South Melbourne.

In 1888, in the year that Lora Alma (Dickie) Calaby was born, on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!
