Lorelei was the first girl I ever met (or even saw) in my life. It was autumn 1946 at the Airmont Elementary School, near Suffern NY. She was one of seven or eight first graders sitting around a table when I, age five, came into the room to be introduced to my new classmates. I had started school a week or two late. She gave her name as Lorelei Wanamaker. A single glance is all it took, and I was hooked. To me she was utterly beautiful. I write this 67 years after it took place and still remember that day. We spent the first and second grades together but just prior to the end of the second grade we both caught the measles and I, at least, missed the last day of school. That summer (1948) my family moved out of the Suffern school district into the next adjoining one (Spring Valley) and I didn't see or even think of Lorelei in my new school. But in the Fall of 1957, when a Senior in Spring Valley High School, I attended a football game my school had with Suffern High School. Lo and behold, I spotted and instantly recognized Lorelei, whom I'd not seen in nine years, and as lovely as ever. I was too shy to speak with her and she passed out of my life. ….Then, in October, 2013, far away, in Oregon, I purchased a pair of pet Russian tortoises, and thinking what to name them, decided upon "Laurel" and "Hardy." Suddenly a better name for the female tortoise occurred to me: Lorelei. And that in turn conjured up memories of Lorelei of long ago. So I googled "Lorelei Wanamaker Suffern High 1958." Which brought me to a web site devoted to that School Class. And there, in alphabetical order was a list of its deceased. Last on said list was printed "Lorelei Ann Wanamaker." With a scream of despair I suddenly realized how much she had been a part of me for so many years, and I hadn't even known it till then. My daytime's been painted black. [contact link]
