  • Introduction

The Gippsland Mercury. Victoria. 15th September 1916. DISTRICT NEWS. Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Monday evening when word was received that a terrible tragedy had taken place at Ramahyuck when the second eldest son of Mr. Hamilton Fraser was killed by his mother. The Gippsland Mercury ( Sale, Victoria.) 22nd September 1916. THE RAMAHYUCK TRAGEDY. - THE INQUEST.- At the Court-house, Sale, on Tuesday, Mr. Chas. J. Grey, P. M., and Coroner, held the adjourned inquest concerning the death of the boy MacDonald Fraser, at Ramahyuck, on the 11th inst. Superintendent Fowler represented the police. Hamilton McDonald Fraser, grazier, at Koorall, nine miles from Stratford, said deceased was his son. On September 11, his wife two children, Miss Wolff and himself had afternoon-tea. He went into the garden, and four minutes afterwards heard some thumping in the bathroom, he heard more heavy thumping and ran up and heard a child screaming, and found the bathroom door locked. He burst it open, and found the deceased unconscious on the floor, and the elder boy standing in the corner with his hands up, protecting himself from Mrs. Fraser, who had an axe in her hand partly uplifted. He grabbed the axe, and took it from her. He said, " What have you done this for? " She made no reply, she appeared a blank. She next said, "The baby now," He then led her inside the house, and went back to the boys, where Miss Wolff attended to them. He stayed with his wife and dispatched a message for Dr. Backhouse and Dr. Haugenauer. Mrs. Fraser was in hospital in Sale last month in confinement. On returning home she seemed well, but weak. At home she said once or twice, "They will be coming for me soon." She had had very little sleep since coming home, her husband had asked Dr. Hagenauer to get a nurse up from Melbourne. Rita Wolf, nurse, deposed she was there on September 11, on September 4, Mrs. Fraser returned home, after giving birth..... The unfortunate woman, in charge of a nurse and a constable in plain clothes, was on Wednesday morning taken to Melbourne, and placed in a receiving home.
