My father used to say, "What was so good about the 'good old days'? The outhouses? The wood stoves?"... and he would go on.

I look at this 1936 photo and the hard work of these women brings what he said to mind. These are the Walker sisters, ginning cotton in front of their log cabin in Little Greenbrier Cove, Tennessee. Two are turning the wheels and it looks like the third is feeding the cotton through the gin. I bet that they were hot, dusty, and tired!

Old family photos like this provide us with a glimpse into what everyday life was like and reminds us that 'the good old days' sometimes weren't as good as we like to remember.

Everything they did was hard work. We don’t know how easy we have it.
