Recollections of Lowell by his Cousin and pal, Mel McBride.
Due to the Griffiths only living 16 miles away in Whittier, CA. It was easy for my family to visit them.
Lowell and I became good friends.
One of my favorite memories was of riding the bus from South Whittier to the public Swimming pool in uptown Whittier.
One of Lowell’s favorite things, was to visut the Gun Range and ask permission to gather spent shells and slugs or bullets.
Lowell had a very special knack for persuading adult strangers to give him things for free. He and I would go to various stores and food stands and ask for candy, gum, toys, half a sandwich, small cup of soda etc. Lowell liked to pretend he was poor and would comb his hair down open his shirt and hike up his pants to look like they were the wrong size, and he even removed the shoe laces from his shoes to make them look like give aways so store owners would give him things.
When Lowell came to visit, my mom always went out of her way to treat him like another son. She took Lowell and I to various amusement parks and museums and let us go to the movies.
