In 1802, on March 16, Congress established the United States Military Academy at West Point - the oldest of the five service academies in the United States and one of the oldest service academies in the world.

In 1811, on December 16th, the New Madrid earthquake - in the Mississippi Valley near the city of New Madrid, Missouri - temporarily reversed the course of the Mississippi River. The quake is estimated to have been 7.5 - 7.9. Other large earthquakes along the fault occurred on January 23rd and February 7th, 1812. These quakes were the largest ever recorded east of the Rockies.

In 1878, in Africa, the death of the last confirmed Cape lion occurred. The Cape lion was slightly larger than other lions and had black ears, a black mane, and black hair on its belly.

In 1902, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.

In 1951, in the year of Lucy C Sertel's passing, on June 25th, CBS began broadcasting in color. There were well over 10 million televisions by that time. The first show in color was a musical variety special titled "Premiere". Hardly anyone had a color TV that could see the show.
