  • Introduction

    At a very young age, Mary lost her mother from tuberculosis. She was raised by her grandmother on the Navajo Indian reservation 15 southwest of Four Corners National Park. Back in the 1940's, every family owned and tended flocks of sheep and goats. Her grandmother taught her everything about raising and managing sheep. Livestock is their survival and the mohair wool woven into rugs were one of many end products sold to local store traders for sustenance and animal feeds. Mary was known for weaving rugs that the traders would pay significant amount. Weaving is hard work and very time consuming, but she knew the rewards for the efforts paid off every time. As a mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, her tenacity and resiliency gave her hope and even made her proud. She married Sam and their marriage ended when she passed, they had 7 children-2 girls and 5 boys. She gave her all to them, inspite of painful times. She will always be remembered for her selfless and unconditional love for her family. A woman of her deep faith certainly resonated and connection she had with her traditional ceremonies were true. It gave her peace and strength. We love you Shima.

In 1931, in the year that M J Slowman was born, on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.

In 1943, when she was only 12 years old, on March 31st, the Broadway musical Oklahoma! opened. Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (the first of their string of successful collaborations), audiences loved it. The musical ran for 2,212 performances originally and was made into a movie in 1954.
