In 1892, in the year that Mabel Zons was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1913, when she was 21 years old, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

15 Astounding Photos of Veterans You've Never Seen Before
On November 11th, Veteran's Day, we celebrate the service of military veterans in the United States. Remember those brave men and women who fought for our country with this collection of powerful images that capture times of war and strife. Armistice Day, the ending of World War I, was celebrated for decades. The armistice began on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. In the United States, the day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 but it's still celebrated on November 11th. Memorial Day was set aside to celebrate those who died in war but Veterans Day honors all of those who have served in the military.
