  • Introduction

No one ever called her Mae. Mostly it was Aunt Addie Mae. She lived on a farm, with cows and pigs, sheep and cats. She told me once, we don't name the cats, these are working cats. They keep mice out of the barn and the house, and boy did they ever. As a reward to the cats, they got fresh milk every morning. She loved to laugh. One of her hands was injured in a coal mine accident, as a result three of her fingers were permanently bent. A doctor once told her he would like to fix it free of charge, but she said no, "I've lived this way for 50 years, don't think it'll do any good now". She collected newspapers with major headlines, Dewey winning the election, Kennedy shot. She also wrote a column for her local newspaper.
