    Marella went to Blessed Sacrament Elementary School in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from Blessed Sacrament, she attended Bishop Dunne High School. She then went on to W H Adamson High School and graduated with honors in 1968. While at Adamson she was in the National Honor Society, the drill team, choir, and theater. She graduated from El Centro Jr College where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. She then went on to the University of North Texas where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1973. After graduation she went to work for Texas International Airlines (the predecessor of Continental Airlines) as a flight attendant.

    Marella was a practicing Catholic. She was Baptized, received her First Holy Communion and Confirmation in the Church. She was active in the CYO. She was in the National Honors Society, Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa. She was proficient in piano and sang in the choir. While at North Texas State University she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.
