  • Introduction

    Margaret “Maggie” Ann GRIFFITH was b. 2 Aug 1859 in Wisconsin to parents Francis “Frank” GRIFFITH (1826-1900) and Lucy Adeline MCREYNOLDS (1832-1907). Maggie was one of four children born to this couple including Samuel; William W.; John J.; and Margaret “Maggie” A. GRIFFITH. Maggie married twice, first to Isadore or Isidor R. “Clarence” LINENFELSER (1863-1920) on 3 Nov 1886 in Rewey, WI with whom she had two sons, Frank or Franke LINENFELSER (1888-1977) and Sam LINENFELSER. Her second marriage was to George DOLPHIN (1848-1906) who she married on 10 Sept 1901 in Iowa County, WI. Maggie died 11 Dec 1944 in Platteville, WI and is buried in the Arthur United Methodist Church Cemetery in Arthur, WI.

In 1904, when she was 45 years old, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.
