Described in her obituary as noble and intrepid, Margaret ("Mag") Emigh was an adventurous young woman, undaunted by travel and who early left home and went out West as a pioneer with her brother Jarvis, following their sister, Emeline, to California. She was the daughter of

A judge, Morgan Emigh of Dutchess, New York
1822-1861 and of

Harriet Emigh Emigh of Mass and Conn, who would follow her out West after Morgan's death. Mag's parents were paternal fourth cousins.

See son George for photograph of family bible.

Margaret was named after her paternal grandmother, Margaret Crouse Emigh (1784–1862), daughter of Adam Crouse and Mary Bentley.

Margaret died in 1920, likely on March 16th.

She is listed with her parents in the 1870 census:
Household Gender Age Birthplace
Morgan Emigh M 48 New York
Harriet Emigh F 44 New York
[Oldest daughter Emeline likely in CA by this time]
Maggie Emigh F 22 New York *
Kate Emigh F 19 New York
Mary Emigh F 16 New York
Jarvis Emigh M 14 New York
Anna Emigh F 12 New York
Ward Emigh M 8 New York
Frank Emigh M 2 New York
Jarvis Emigh M 68 New York [older brother of Morgan]
Mellvil Snedezer M 24 New York

She is listed as a widow in the 1910 census living with her daughter and son-in-law in Beckwourth, Plumas, California:

John H Peterson 43
Annie G[oble] Peterson 32
Floyd E Peterson 10
Gladys Peterson 8
Edith Peterson 7
Margaret E[migh] Goble 62 *

James E. Goble **Find A Grave Memorial #15548882
1833-1903 of New York (be careful as there are two James Gobles listedborn in New York
in 1833, and this may arise because a neighbor may have filled in one census in which James' parents are listed as born in Germany). Margaret Emigh Goble and her husband are buried together near the Northern Nevada-California border.

Her husband, Mr. Goble was known for homesteading large tracts of land in Northern California and for being one of the only not-"wild" men of the area in the early west--a reason his mother-in-law, Mrs. Harriet Emigh, often chose to spend her time visiting that group of her California children in his home on Sundays rather than with the slightly more rough around the edges though loved Wiltse family--whom she was visiting when she passed away.

Margaret's daughter with James Goble, Annie Goble (1878), married John H. Peterson (1886).

Their son Edmond James Goble (1879) married
Ida Christine Scott (Skyodt before immigration anglicization) of Iowa, whom he met during the World Fair and railroad work (1886).

Margaret Emigh sailed around (per my great-grandmother)the cape of South America to get to the west coast to be with James Goble--though this may be another woman in the family--as the story is often repeated and validated by others, but the name of the woman from NY to CA usually not given. A historical reference was found in the Emigh Pioneers book about Emeline Emigh Wiltse's brothers-in-law crossing the Isthmus of Panama in 1849. Because the canal did not yet exist, these men would have had to arrive by ship, cross the isthmus on foot, and then take a second ship to California--so the story may arise because Mag was one of the first young women of the family to go west, and she may have been sent with Jarve (who left before their mother Harriet and younger sons) around the Cape instead (to avoid natives)--story unclear.

Margaret's father:
"Morgan Emigh was elected in 1850 to be the first justice of the peace of the newly formed town of East Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York. He was usually called "Judge Emigh". See history of Dutchess Co. N.Y., by Hasbrouck, page 292.

Morgan and Harriet Emigh were married in Dutchess Co. Morgan was also a farmer in addition to serving as Justice of the Peace. Some time before his death, the older children, Emeline, Margaret and Jarvis (our grandfather) had moved to California. In 1879, Harriet with her sons Ward and Frank also came to California near the town of Loyalton.

In 1880 Harriet with her sons Ward, Frank, (Jarvis with his new wife Eugenia) left California by covered wagons and saddle horses for the Bickleton area in Washington Territory. It was a slow trip over bad roads or no roads at all thru North-East California and Oregon into Washington. Eugenia wrote a most interesting story, "The pioneer life of the Emigh Family", which tells of their trip in 1879 from Poughkeepsie, New York to Sierra Valley, California and in 1880 when they came north to Bickleton."

Her husband, James: Find A Grave Memorial# 15548882

Her son, Edmond: Find A Grave Memorial# 128381964, married Ida Christine Skyodt.

Her daughter, Annie, married a John H Peterson, June 1st, 1898 at the Goble Ranch, near Vinton, CA.

Her baby son, George, died in infancy.
