Margaret K Hayes' History: 1903 - 1989

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Margaret K Hayes was my next door neighbor in Indianapolis from the time I was three (1950) until the time she left to move to San Diego around 1960. She was married to William A. (Bill) Hayes who had some family in the Indianapolis area - at least two brothers I believe. Bill Hayes worked at the Allison Coupon Co., downtown Indy until the time of his death from cancer (he was a cigarette smoker) about 1959 (insert obit citation for). They moved to Indianapolis I believe after WW2 (unsure, but there by 1950 which I am sure of). She was very talented, artsy and played the piano. I used to practice my trombone with her giving lessons from about 1956 until entering high school in 1961. They Hayes's were beloved neighbors, and Mr. Hayes was one of my father figures who had a great impact on my life. We used to watch baseball on TV with Dizzy Dean as announcer, and played catch in their back yard. As it ended up, in the 70's and early 80's business took me to San Diego quite frequently , and almost without exception Mrs. Hayes and I would go to dinner - the dinner special she liked to get would always serve two buns and she's wrap one in a paper napkin and put into her purse for later. She lived out her years in the North Park area of SD, in an upstairs 1-BR apartment. She was quite a character and had two purses with slogans that exemplified her personality One said: GUTSY LADY, and the other FIA CON DIOS. In Indy she was a member and attended Church of Christ Scientist. Mr & Mrs. Hayes, dear neighbors that were like family, lived at 3201 E. 38th Street, across from the Meadows Apts. My maternal grandparents and family moved to 3205 E. 38th in the early 20's when the city ended at 38th St. and the street was a one-lane dirt road for Roberts Dairy cattle. Roberts Dairy was at the intersection of Millersville Rd and E. 42nd Street. The Hayes and other families in our neighborhood were one of the great communities that existed in that ear - an era of stability, few moves and job changes (before MbA mandated efficiency and when the US made 70% of the world's goods; an era long gone - real neighbors, family values and stability, unlocked homes and cars with the keys left in them). I was fortunate to have had Margaret and her husband in my life. I could swear that she went by Margaretha, but that may have been her embellishment. I don't know a thing about her family, and if she had siblings I was unaware of it then, and now. They were/are great people and an important part of my "roots.""

In 1903, in the year that Margaret K Hayes was born, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.
