  • Obituary

Patricia Jensen Oberlander Knapp, 91, died at Santiam Memorial Hospital in Stayton, Oregon on May 31, 2008 following a heart attack. Pat was born in Banks, Oregon on March 17, 1917 and was named Patricia in honor of her St. Patrick's Day birthday. She lived, over half her life, in Banks, Los Angeles, Portland, Anchorage, Seattle, Hillsboro, Beaverton, Dallas and Salem. She was a life-long learner who took college and other courses "for fun". Over the years, she studied geology, computer programming, native plants and arts and crafts. She was an active member of the Mazamas, a Portland climbing club, chairing the Conservation Committee and earning recognition for hiking 1,000 miles on Mazama trips. Pat was an expert seamstress. In another craft she used her interest in rocks and minerals in lapidary work and making jewelry. In 1941, Pat joined the second group of women who became Navy Waves during World War II. She was a weather forecaster for the blimp surveillance aircraft in Georgia during her Navy service. Working in accounting related jobs most of her life, Pat was the Beaverton City Recorder and later ran her own office service business. Travel was another important part of Pat's life. In her retirement, she worked part-time at a travel agency and guided and participated in many trips, including Earthwatch expeditions. She also camped, traveled and hiked extensively in the Pacific Northwest. Pat was married to Fred Knapp in 1999 and she enjoyed life with Fred until his death. She is survived by her three children: Carol Brown of Independence, Chuck Oberlander, Salem, and Pat Evenson-Brady, Hood River; as well as seven grandchildren: Billi Jean, Chris and Nichole Oberlander, Eric Brown, Rachel Julum and Philip and Dylan Brady. Pat donated her body to OSHU and will later be interred at Willamette National Cemetery. Donation in her memory may be made to the Nature Conservancy or to the Mazamas Education fund, 527 SE 43rd Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97215.

Billi's memories of Grammie
Some of my fondest memories of Grammie where when she would visit us after taking a trip. She would bring back gifts that were educational for the area she had visited.

She would help my mom with clothes after she divorced dad. I remember that we used to get teased. I do not remember how I acted as a child but I do remember that having hand make clothes was such a unique thing without understanding that used to be normal.

I remember spending some summers with Grammie and we would go to the garden to pick vegetables to can. I never truly understood where food came from before this. We would help her pick the vegetables and stuff them in our mouths at the same time.
