Maria (Partyka) Gumul was born on August 13th, 1894, in Poland, to Stanislaw Partyka and Florentina Wypych. She migrated to the United States from Bremerhaven, Germany, arriving on the ship General R.M. Blatchford on January 31st, 1951. Maria Partyka wed Roman Gumul (1893 - 1961) in Poland before they immigrated with the final destination of Snover, Michigan, United States. Roman, also born in Poland, and Maria had five children. Their daughter Josefa, aged 16, arrived with them in 1951. While some sources say that Maria was born in 1895, most state that she was born in 1894 and her obituary puts her at the age of 98 when she died, which would agree with the birthdate of August 13th, 1894. Maria, likely raised Catholic given the Rosary recitation at her funeral, was born in Poland to Polish parents. She later married Roman Gumul, who was registered as a Polish Jew in 1942.

Maria's family held a two-day prayer service known as a Rosary, which is a Catholic tradition involving prayers to God through the intercession of the Blessed Mother. Meanwhile, her husband, Roman, is listed on a Polish record of Jews in the Radom district of Poland in 1942.

Maria was born on August 13, 1894, in Poland, to Stanislaw Partyka and Florentina Wypych. While in Poland, she married Roman Gumul, a Polish Jew, and together they immigrated to the United States in 1951, settling in Snover, Michigan. Snover is approximately 104 miles from their eventual home in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout their lives, Roman and Maria had five children: Stanley, Helena, Jan, Janina, and Josephine Gumul. Maria spent the rest of her 98 years in the Detroit, Michigan area, where she was survived by thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
