Maria May Russell of Creswick Australia was born in 1884 in Creswick to Edward Russell and Anne Brown Russell. She had a brother Edward James Russell. She married John Moncur (Mana) Forbes on May 14, 1913, and they were married until John's death. She had a child Joan Elizabeth (Forbes) Sexton. Maria Russell died at age 90 years old on July 1, 1975 in Palmerston North, New Zealand County, Manawatu-Wanganui New Zealand, and was buried in Foxton.

In 1884, in the year that Maria May Russell was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. In 1906, at the age of 22 years old, Maria was alive when English biochemist Frederick Hopkins concluded that vitamins are essential to the human body and that a lack of vitamins caused scurvy and rickets. Scurvy and rickets were both huge problems in sailors that were at sea for extended time and the addition of vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium in their diets helped eradicate the problem.
