Marian A. Bartels, 59, Veteran Commack Middle School Teacher, Dies Wife of Hans Bartels, National Manager, Report & Forecast MELVILLE, NY, Nov. 16, 2008 - Marian A. Bartels, of Melville, a 36-year teacher in the Commack School District, died of a stroke on Nov. 14, 2008. The 59-year-old native of Queens Village, N.Y., taught Home & Careers at Commack Middle School. Bartels has been described as a consummate professional who touched the lives of the more than 21,000 students whom she taught. "Marian loved her craft and, in turn, was loved by her students and colleagues," said Joyce Conneely, the middle school's chair of the Family & Consumer Sciences Department. "Her great passion was learning and teaching," Conneely added. After receiving her undergraduate degree at Syracuse University, Bartels began her teaching career in Commack. She subsequently earned a master's degree from New York University. Bartels was twice nominated as the school district's Teacher of the Year, where a scholarship is being established in her name. She was a member of the Long Island Chapter of the New York State Association of Family & Consumer Sciences Educators. A 33-year resident of Melville, Bartels belonged to Temple Beth El in Huntington, where she was an active member of the Sisterhood. An avid boater since 1982, she was a member of Masthead Cove Yacht Club in Huntington. Bartels is survived by her parents, Dr. & Mrs. Sheldon Schwartz of Queens Village, her husband of 33 years, Hans Bartels of Melville, sister Frances Douglas of Dix Hills, daughter Janine Bartels-Rachlin of Coral Springs, Fla., son Paul Bartels of Melville and one grandson. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 17, 11:00 a.m., at Temple Beth El in Huntington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.ADVERTISEMENT BYLooking for more information?
